Mechanical Engineer
Do you want to drive the future of cellular agriculture, set the industry standard on whole-cut cultivation, and lead the integration of scaffolds into bioreactors?
What and Why
Sallea is developing and manufacturing superior edible scaffolds for the cultivation of whole cut meat and fish filets. Committed to a future of sustainable, cruelty-free, and safe protein production, we’re looking for a stellar, experienced and mission-driven Mechanical Engineer to take the lead in the development of a first-of-its-kind bioreactor solution for the cultivation of texturized meat.
Role Responsibility
– Lead the entire mechanical development, concept design and 3D modeling, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing-readiness of the bioreactor solution
– Design for biological function, work closely with our tech team and translate biological requirements (e.g. perfusion, oxygenation, shear stress) into mechanical design parameters
– Ensure cost-effective scalability by collaborating with the finance team to conduct relevant financial analyses
– Prototype rapidly and iterate using both in-house tools and external fabrication partners
– Develop testing protocols to validate mechanical design parameters
– Select and source materials suitable for food-grade, and bio-compatible environments
– Document designs and processes thoroughly for future scale-up and regulatory review (GMP, food-grade compliance, etc.)
Requirements
– M.Sc. in Mechanical or Biomechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
– >3 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design and development, ideally in a startup or rapid, R&D-heavy environment
– Prior experience with bioreactor systems/bioprocess equipment and/or medical devices, microfluidics, or lab automation
– Relentless problem-solving mindset, even under pressure and limited resources, balancing speed with precision
– Ability to work highly autonomous yet collaborative; you can lead and know when to ask for input
– Excellent communication and documentation skills
– Additionally, prior experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:
– Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and simulation tools (FEA, CFD a bonus)
– Familiarity with fluid dynamics and sterile design principles
– Understanding of cleanroom/GMP requirements
